Editor's Note: BUILDING A FINANCIAL FORTRESS includes investing lessons learned and ideas born in the Great Recession.
Book Description: This book was written in the depths of the Great Recession, as I contemplated how to protect and build personal wealth in an investing environment that had gone mad and where it seemed no matter where you put your money you were sure to lose it.
The essence of the Financial Fortress is that as savers and investors, we need to first have a strong defense before we can have a strong offense. As volatility in world markets seems to worsen each year and booms/busts become more intense, preservation of capital is paramount but so is finding opportunities to leverage what we have in order to grow our wealth.
Author's Inspiration: I work in the real estate industry and one day in 2006, we laid off half of our department. At the same time, the value of my 401(k) dropped 50% (this followed a 50% drop during the Dot.com meltdown in 2000-2002). These events got me to thinking seriously about defensive and opportunistic investing and led to my development of the Financial Fortress model, which I lay out in this book.
